"During the period of imprisonment every prisoner has the right to use a library in his free time (StVollzG § 67)
On the basis of the Hamburg Transparency Act (HmbTG), which enables every citizen to request information about state institutions, the current library stock of the Hamburg Juvenile Detention Centre was inquired. The books used for the installation were compiled from the stock of Hamburg's public libraries or acquired additionally. The shelves were made through prisoner labour at Münster Prison (NRW) and purchased through Knastladen.de. Conditions around the library like procurement, opening hours, budget, training or qualification of the responsible staff were inquired and shown on an infoboard.
The format of the installation is not fixed and can be adapted to the space in which it is shown. The books can be taken out and read by visitors of the exhibition.
